Jan 27th General Housekeeping: for this week
-This is an incredibly busy term with so much new and exciting happening. We are writing a sentence together almost daily, getting ready to write our own. We should be using a capital at the beginning and a period at the end. My belief is that we should teach the lower and upper case letters together. It is so key that we praise students for the sounds they hear. We don't want to build a sense of false confidence, what we want to do it celebrate what they are doing. In my class we write sentences by counting how many words are in what I want to write, an example -I love treats. on my hand I will count with my fingers I-1, love -2, treats-3 and simply draw three lines in a row on my page. They need to be big enough for kindergarten letters. Next I will go back and try to write whatever sounds I hear from my word. So, I will literally call students up to write what they hear. This could be the initial letter of the word, a sound in the middle or a final letter, this is all progress!!! get excited!!! I ask students to chew the word and pull it out of their mouth like bubble gum, slow, and hearing as many sounds as possible. Phonetic spelling is what I will often call 'kindergarten spelling' or (a students) 'Alan's spelling'- it is literally what they hear. We don't want students simply asking an expert (an adult) for the letters, we want them to write what they hear. Really talk with your child about what they hear, praise what they can hear, if they are not yet ready to write letters on their own, I will have them tell me the sounds, talk with them about what letter makes that sound, then if they can't yet find it using a strategy like the alphabet song, then, I will point to it on a alphabet strip.
-I was sad to have missed Penguin day, I am so glad the students did get to make a mask with the TOC.
-I have post an 'Adult Reading' schedule for the rest of the year in the calendar (the pull down on the top right). To come into the classroom, please do a criminal record check, contact the office for information on how to do that.
-Looking at books and words is key to Kindergarten development, reading daily with students is really important. Soon I will be offering books to go home and back with students who are reading or ready to read. Reading is not an expectation for Kindergarten but, everyone moves at a different pace. I will offer reading books to all students around spring break and then after until the end of the year.
-As identifying letters is still key we are adding the need to connect sounds to letters, some students who were proficient last term will be 'developing' this term. As the expectations for the term (year) change, so will how your child understands.
-A short amount of time (5-10 min) with specific practice one-on-one with your child with academic focus with identifying letters, letter sounds, letter combinations, or identifying words, identifying numbers, or breaking down or putting together numbers is really key for your child.
-Please reach out if you have questions.
-If you have not heard yet, we have a bunch of balls and skipping ropes in our class for sign out for outside break times!
-We voted today and we have brought back calendar for this week. We will discuss further what we will change over the next few weeks.
-'Pete the Cat' has started his sleepovers this past week. Pete should go home to your house for his weekend on Thursday and please return him for Monday (Tuesday if there is no school on a Monday). Oct 7th General Housekeeping: for this week
-It was a short week last week but busy. In Kindergarten we are trying something new often daily. We are curious and love to explore so we are often learning new games, or tools, or routines. I sent home a weekly schedule but, our schedule is often changing. We have not started all the routines of the class and our class is shaped by the students each day, and sometimes activities are added and sometimes others are left aside.
-Please do complete the online SD35 paperwork, the paperwork includes a sign off for our class to go outside for nature walks to explore Fall.
-The 'Alphabet Jive,'(our fun get to know the sounds of letters action filled song) will continue to go home with a few students. It will generally go home on Monday, and return on Friday- sometimes the weeks are a little silly and like this week, they need to come back on Thursday.
-Exciting news, Thursday Oct 17th the Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes will be taking part in a Pumpkin Patch in partnership with Venechuk Farms. It will take place at the school with a cost is $6 per student. We will send home a paper Monday with all the information. We will be collecting the fee through schoolcashonline due for Friday, Oct 11th. If you have questions, please do ask!
-'Show and Tell #2 is Guess the Item.' I have briefly talked about the show and tell with students and this coming week, I will share examples with them. On Thursday Oct 10th our first 2 students will share. Each student will get a paper bag with a card attached. The show and tell item should match the first letter of their first name. An example would be Alan has something that starts with an 'A' in his bag, and the clue: this animal can only be seen in a zoo here in Canada. Students in the class will offer guesses as to what is in the bag. If not guessed we will share the item at the end. Alan brought an 'ape.'

Sept 30th General Housekeeping: for this week
-Continue to be gentle with yourself and the Kindergartener in your life this week, going to school full time is a huge change for everyone.
-The fire drill went over well this past week. There were a few unsure looks and feelings and that is to be expected. We will have many practice drills over the year to continue to be prepared for different situations.
-It was so nice to see so families at the Meet the Teacher on Thursday, if you did not pop in but want to, just drop me a line. At the Meet the Teacher I mentioned to as many parents as I could that, I would like to use volunteers for our special reading time (potentially on a Friday in the future), and for joining us on field trips. In order to join our class all adults need to have a RCMP criminal record check, you can grab a copy of the paper to do so from me, or the office, it waves the cost so is essential.
-Just a note, runners are best for inside shoes as we do gym in the inside shoes, crocks are really not ideal due to safety.
-A few kindergarteners are finishing almost all their food at recess 10:00am, please do check in with your child, do they need more food to come to school?
-This week, I will send home an 'Alphabet Jive,'(our fun get to know the sounds of letters action filled song) with a few students. It will generally go home on Monday, and return on Friday- sometimes the weeks are a little silly and like this week, they need to come back on Thursday.
-We started buddies this week, our buddy class is Ms. Miller's class, and the students all had a great time connecting with their buddies. I was honestly really excited to see how well the little activity went and the game to follow too. We will have buddies every second Thursday (with some flexibility)
-I plan this week to send home our schedule, it changes with the need of the students so, it will always be a draft and changing all the time.
-'Show and Tell #1' continues, see the schedule in the post Sept 16th post below
Monday, Sept 30th - No school in observance of Truth and Reconcilliation

Sept 23rd General Housekeeping: for this week
-One whole week, yipeee!!of Kindergarten! You may home noticed some real tiredness this week, or perhaps a need for more food, maybe some conversations about 'how Ms. Sanderson does things,'that it is different than at home, all totally normal. Touch base if you ever have concern.
-We have really enjoyed our time at gym, we are lucky to have Ms. Yoon to help us developmentally advance our skills.
-Students are welcome to borrow one book from the library each week, and then return by Wednesday (Library Day) so we can borrow another. It is not a big deal but, the library will only allow one book out per child. If a book does get lost, please just contact myself or the office so we can replace it and continue with borrowing.
-I was away for Wednesday morning and the students had their first TOC, it was all well received by the students.
-We are using 'Power Talk.' Power talk is used when we have a problem, 'Please stop, I don't like it when....' If the problem does not stop, or an apology is not given, students will come to me to help solve the problem. We hope that students will continue to try and solve their problem with kind words. It really is empowering to solve our own problems. As the year goes on we will add more to our problem solving strategies.
-We will continue with something novel almost every week, it keeps everyone curious and engaged!
-I will be placing the scholastic books delivery tomorrow morning, please be sure if you want to order to do it tonight or it will not be sent until next month.
-I hope the 'Back and Forth' bag (ziploc) will help things get home and back again. Any students work that comes home in the 'Back and Forth' bag is to stay at home. I hope students are bringing them daily as I put a sticker in the bag everyday that it comes back! There is no need to do missed work and return it, I simply want them to feel included, there is too much going on each day to bog students down with missed work.
-Today was our first day without pinnies at outside time, we will continue to talk about expectations at outside time.
-This is a call out to any parent that would like to be a 'Class Parent.' A 'Class Parent' helps plan and coordinate special days in the classroom. It can be a position for 1 parent or a combination of parents, please let me know if you would like to be a 'Class Parent.'
-Tuesday, Sept 24th, we will have our first Fire drill as a school, I will be talking about this at school. Also, 'Show and Tell #1' (See schedule in the post Sept 16th)
-Wednesday, Sept 25th 'Show and Tell #1'
-Thursday, Sept 26th Show and Tell, and Meet the Teacher at 5:00

-I have sent a couple of emails over the past 2 weeks, please check your junk mail if they have not arrived. I do make mistakes so, please do follow-up with me if something didn't get to your email you listed on the form with me on our meeting day.
-We have had so many new tools to put into our coloured bins and many new routines too!
-We created our classroom rules and put our painted hands on the poster to create our connection to our class.
-I hope the 'Back and Forth' bag (ziploc) will help things get home and back again. Any students work that comes home in the 'Back and Forth' bag is to stay at home. I hope students are bringing them daily as I put a sticker in the bag everyday that it comes back!
-Today we went out at recess and lunch with just a walk with Ms. Sanderson to the blacktop. There are many supervisors out each breaktime! We have the Kindergarteners wear pinnies for the first week or so, so that supervisors can quickly identify students new to the school. We also had our first gym class with Ms. Yoon.
-This is a call out to any parent that would like to be a 'Class Parent.' A 'Class Parent' helps plan and coordinate special days in the classroom. It can be a position for 1 parent or a combination of parents, please let me know if you would like to be a 'Class Parent.'

-We had all 19 students in the class today, and it was another great day. We did some work with crayons, we did get to check out the play ground and we read 'First Day Jitters' during snack today.

-Please do send in a pair of inside shoes this week that are great for inside and gym (rubber soles), and a full change of clothes in a labelled ziplock. Today a couple students used their change of clothes, I'm sorry I don't have extra plastic bags so if you want to put one in their change of clothes, I do send the wet clothes home in backpacks generally the day they get wet.
-Please note we have a different 'recess schedule' than the other students due to our gradual entry, we will work our way this week to being outside with the whole school.
